Association Luncheon and CLE – September 9, 2008
The Albuquerque Bar Association’s Membership Luncheon will be
held Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 12:00 noon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel,
330 Tijeras NW.
Luncheon
Speaker: Dr. Cheryl L. Willman MD,
Director & CEO of UNM Cancer Center
Dr. Cheryl L. Willman is an internationally known leukemia
researcher and Director and CEO of the UNM Cancer Center. The UNM Cancer Center has been ranked as
one of “America’s Best Cancer Hospitals” by U.S. News & World
Report. In her research, Dr.
Willman focuses on finding the causes and the cures for patients affected
by leukemia. She has published over
160 scientific articles in journals, books and reviews. Throughout her career, she has received
numerous research grants and awards from NCI, HHMI and the W. M. Keck
Foundation. She is a member of the
U. S. Department of Energy Women in Science Hall of Fame. She is currently Chair of the
Biosciences Review Panel at Sandia National Laboratories and a Member of
the Sandia External Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Willman has also won numerous public service awards,
including most recently in the 16th Governor’s Award for
Outstanding New Mexico Women (2001), and The New Mexico Distinguished
Public Service Award (2005).

“Law in Cuba:
Two Lawyers’ Perspectives”

Join
Margaret Katze and Shana Pennington as they discuss their recent trip to
Cuba to study the Cuban legal system. They traveled to Cuba in June
of 2008 with the permission of the United States government pursuant to a
visa for academic, non-commercial research with the Texas Independent Bar
Association. Ms. Katze and Ms. Pennington will provide an overview of
the topics covered during the week-long seminar. Ms. Katze, who
also traveled to Cuba in 2000 with the same group, will provide her
insights on how the country has changed over the past 8 years.
Margaret Katze: Margaret
Katze was born in New York and attended Syracuse Law School. She has
worked as a public defender for 20 years. Ms. Katze has been
with the Federal Public Defender's office in Albuquerque for the past 6
years.
Shana
Pennington: Originally from New Mexico, Ms. Pennington returned to
her home state after various jaunts around the country and abroad.
She attended Cornell Law School, after which she clerked for the Honorable
James O. Browning, United States District Court Judge for the District of
New Mexico. Ms. Pennington is an associate with Lewis and Roca LLP's
Albuquerque office.
